Tertullian (160-220)

In his Treatise Concerning Prayer Tertullian wrote:

Lest we should be as far away from the ears of God as we are from His precepts, the recollection of the precepts [such as Matthew 5:24] paves the way to heaven for our prayers.  He encouraged the prayerful to bring to God what he called "enriched prayer."  The more diligent in prayer are wont to subjoin [add or append] in their prayers the "Hallelujah" [Psa. 145-150] and such kind of psalms.
