The Three Parts of Man
Man is Tripartite (Three Parts)
Mary McDonough in the early 1900's wrote about man's tripartite being in her book, "God's Salvation and Man's Redemption."
But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. (Jeremiah 31:33)
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden [part] thou shalt make me to know wisdom. (Psalms 51:6)
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden [part] thou shalt make me to know wisdom. (Psalms 51:6)
This section is actually based on the references in the Word to the "Tripartite Man" or the three-part man as described in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 and Hebrews 4:12.
And the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly, and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
For the word of God is living and operative and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow, and able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)
1 Thessalonians clearly mentions the spirit and soul and body of the believer. Hebrews clearly distinguishes between the spirit and soul and then implies the body by the phrases "joints and marrow."
Many Christians believe and teach that the human spirit and the human soul are the same entity. According to the above references, there is a clear delineation between the two. Also, the Lord spoke of "denying the self" and "losing the soul life" in Matthew 16:24-26 (see also Mark 8:34-37; Luke 9:23-25). I do not believe the Lord was telling His disciples to lose their spirit or to deny their spirit. He was referring to their soul, their person, their self. Then in John 10:11 the Lord said, "I am the good Shepherd; the good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." The word "life" in John 10:11 is the same word as soul life, meaning the Lord laid down His soul. He did not lay down His spirit which was always absolutely one with the Father.
We will present Scripture which unveils the function of each of the three parts of man.
