The Human Spirit
Recognizing the spirit of man
The spirit of man [is] the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly. (Proverbs 20:27)
The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. (Zechariah 12:1)
But [there is] a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. (Job 32:8)
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (John 3:6)
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truthfulness. (John 4:24)
The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God. (Romans 8:16)
Three Functions of the Human Spirit
1. CONSCIENCE
 to bear witness
I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie, my conscience bearing witness with me in the Holy Spirit (Romans 9:1)

 to condemn or justify
For I delivered to you, first of all, that which also I received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scripture (1 Corinthians 15:3)
 to confirm right and wrong
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalms 51:10)
The LORD [is] nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (Psalms 34:18)
But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as [appeareth] this day. (Deuteronomy 2:30)
2. FELLOWSHIP
 to worship God
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truthfulness. (John 4:24)
For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the gospel of His Son, how unceasingly I make mention of you always in my prayer (Romans 1:9)
 to serve God
But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held, so that we serve in newness of spirit and not in oldness of letter. (Romans 7:6)
 to pray to the Lord
By means of all prayer and petition, praying at every time in spirit and watching unto this in all perseverance and petition concerning all the saints (Ephesians 6:18)
 to contact God
And my spirit has exulted in God my Savior. (Luke 1:47)
 being joined to the Lord in spirit
But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:17)

3. INTUITION
 to discern
For who among men knows the things of man, except the spirit of man which is in him? In the same way, the things of God also no one has known except the Spirit of God. (1 Corinthians 2:11)
 to perceive
And immediately Jesus, knowing fully in His spirit that they were reasoning this way within themselves, said to them, Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? (Mark 2:8)
 to groan or sigh in spirit
And He groaned deeply in His spirit and said, Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly I tell you, No sign shall be given to this generation. (Mark 8:12)
Then Jesus, when He saw her weeping and the Jews who came with her weeping, was moved with indignation in His spirit and was troubled. (John 11:33)
