A Basic Understanding of a Time with the Lord
To enjoy the Lord in all His unsearchable riches we must spend time with Him frequently.  Any relationship is strengthened, deepened and broadened only by mutual interactions which requires quantity as well as quality of time.  To help us in this matter of spending time with the Lord, we will present three basic experiences that should become apparent in our time with the Lord if we are pursuing a healthy relationship with Him.

1.  KNOWING THE ANOINTING

And you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know. (1 John 2:20)

And as for you, the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone teach you; but as His anointing teaches you concerning all things and is true and is not a lie, and even as it has taught you, abide in Him.  (1 John 2:27)

a) the anointing is just the sensation of the Lord's presence
b) we can help the anointing by certain practices laid out in the scriptures.  For instance, practice to touch the Lord's presence early in the morning by using the following exercises to bring us into spirit:  (a) calling on the Lord's name (Romans 10:12-13), (b) groaning in spirit (Romans 8:26), (c) praying genuinely, simply and sincerely to the Lord (1 Thessalonians 5:17; Ephesians 6:18), (d) mix prayer with your reading of the Word (Ephesians 6:17-18), and (e) singing (Hebrews 2:12; Matthew 26:30).

2.  BEING CLEANSED BEFORE THE LORD

a) the Lord as light shines on us in our reading and study of the Word, in our meditation before the Lord, in our prayer, etc.

And this is the message which we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.  6  If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and are not practicing the truth;  7  But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from every sin. (1 John 1:5-7)

b) learn to take the precious blood of Christ through confession

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  (1 John 1:9)

Knowing that it was not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, that you were redeemed from your vain manner of life handed down from your fathers,  19  But with precious blood, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot, the blood of Christ. (1 Peter 1:18-19)

c) learn to sense the Spirit's witnessing within us

This is He who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ; not in the water only, but in the water and in the blood; and the Spirit is He who testifies, because the Spirit is the reality. (1 John 5:6)

The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God.  (Romans 8:16)

It is not only that the Spirit witnesses and our spirit witnesses also. Rather, it is that the Spirit witnesses with our spirit. This indicates that our spirit must take the initiative to
witness first; then the Spirit will witness with our spirit.  [The New Testament Recovery Version, Romans 8:16, Footnote 1, Living Stream Ministry]

d) we can also sense the Spirit's washing within us

And these things were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11)

As Christians, we have matters from our past that have been washed away.  The Lord has removed many such blemishes from us and we testify that we are clean despite what we have done previously.

e) enjoy the living Word of God which washes and gives life

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words which I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. (John 6:63)

Husbands, love your wives even as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her  26  That He might sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing of the water in the word.  (Ephesians 5:25-26)

3.  PROGRESSING IN THE LORD'S LEADING AND SPEAKING

a) We begin by touching the Lord and His presence.  Everyday we seek Him and seek His living speaking to us for our daily nourishment and strength to love Him and follow Him with our whole heart.

b) Once we establish a clear touch with the Lord, we must learn to abide in His presence.  The Lord is a real, living Person, and to know Him intimately we must abide with Him a definite amount of time.

c) As we abide in the Lord's presence we must learn to develop the conversation to determine what it is the Lord is after, what is His heart's desire for us.  To accomplish this we must know the Lord as a Person and have the ability to enjoy Him personally and affectionately.
