Twelve Aspects Of The Spirit
And the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
(2 Corinthians 3:17)
The name of the Lord is crucial and profound matter. The apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians makes the Lord equal to the Spirit implying the depths of understanding available to practically apply the Spirit, who is the Lord, in our daily lives to accomplish God's purpose. We would like to present a brief synopsis of the Spirit as seen from Genesis to Revelation.
We are in NO way implying that there is more than one Spirit of God nor are we implying in anyway that God is not Triune in His Trinity. We fully receive, accept and believe that God is one in essence, yet three in economy (God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit).
AS THE SOURCE of our organic salvation
The Spirit of God
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Genesis 1:2
The Triune God is full of desire to reach man and be one with man. Therefore, He is first depicted as the "Spirit of God" in relation to the creation of the universe, the earth and particularly man.
The Spirit of Jehovah (The Spirit of the Lord)
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim. (Judges 3:10)
After man's fall in the garden of Eden, the Triune God desires to be one with man in our weaknesses. God desires a relationship with His created mankind after they broke fellowship with Him. Beginning in the book of Judges, the phrase "the Spirit of Jehovah" is used continually. This may indicates God's deep desire to have an intimate relationship with man.
The Holy Spirit
But while he pondered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which has been begotten in her is of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:20)
The Triune God desires us to be holy as He is holy (Matthew 5:48; 1 Peter 1:16). Therefore, He sanctifies us from anything common.
Matthew 1:20 is the first reference to the Holy Spirit in the Bible. There are two Old Testament verses that some translations use the phrase "the Holy Spirit" but these verse are referring to the divine nature of God the Spirit rather than the Person of the Holy Spirit (Psalms 51:11; Isaiah 63:10-11). Therefore, some translations use the phrase "the Spirit of holiness" for those two Old Testament references.
AS THE SUBSTANCE of our organic salvation
The Spirit of Truth or Reality
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, that He may be with you forever, 17 Even the Spirit of reality, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him; but you know Him, because He abides with you and shall be in you. (John 14:16-17)
But when the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of reality, who proceeds from the Father, He will testify concerning Me. (John 15:26)
But when He, the Spirit of reality, comes, He will guide you into all the reality; for He will not speak from Himself, but what He hears He will speak; and He will declare to you the things that are coming. (John 16:13)
All that God is, all that God has, and all that God does is contained in the Spirit of reality. As the Spirit of reality, God substantiates, declares and infuses His believers with Himself.
The Life-giving Spirit
So also it is written, ``The first man, Adam, became a living soul''; the last Adam became a life-giving Spirit. (1 Corinthians 15:45)
It is the Spirit who gives life (John 6:63a) and brings us out of every death situation. It is through the Lord being the life-giving Spirit that we touch Him as the Spirit and enjoy His life in our spirit.
The Spirit of Life
For the law of the Spirit of life has freed me in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and of death. (Romans 8:1)
The Spirit of life causes us to love the Lord, to love the Bible, to love the gospel, to love the church (His Body), and to consecrate ourselves to the Lord and to follow the Lord's according to the narrow gate and constricted way (Matthew 7:13-14). He even gives life to our mortal bodies (Romans 8:11).
AS THE EXPERIENCE of our organic salvation
The Spirit of Jesus
And when they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, yet the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. (Acts 16:7)
The Spirit of Jesus is related to suffering for the sake of the Lord's Body, His church (Colossians 1:24)
The Spirit of Christ
But you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Yet if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not of Him. (Romans 8:10)
We need the Spirit of Christ as our portion in order to live the resurrection life of Christ and to carry out God's eternal economy on the earth. Christ was the anointed One who suffered and died on our behalf, but also who lived the life of God's intention and the life of God Himself on the earth. Leviticus 1-7 speaks of the many sacrifices that were offered to God as proper worship. All of these offerings are types of Christ who was sacrificed on the cross to bear our sins and to release the divine life so we could live in resurrection and carry out God's will. Before the Lord died He was humiliated and beaten which was typified by the Levitical sacrifices being skinned and cut into pieces.
The Spirit of Jesus Christ
For I know that for me this will turn out to salvation through your petition and the bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:19)
The Spirit of Jesus Christ renders to us a particular supply of the divine life and nature in order to meet a particular need of the Body.
AS THE OPERATION of our organic salvation
The Lord Spirit
But we all with unveiled face, beholding and reflecting like a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord Spirit. 4:1 Therefore having this ministry as we have been shown mercy, we do not lose heart. (2 Corinthians 3:18-4:1)
The Lord Spirit is the agent of our transformation in the divine life. Even more so, the Lord Spirit dispenses into us over time and especially in all negative situations to produce New Testament ministers equipped with the Spirit to minister Christ to His Body.
The Seven Spirits of God
And out of the throne come forth lightnings and voices and thunders. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. (Revelation 4:5)
And I saw in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures and in the midst of the elders a Lamb standing as having just been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. (Revelation 5:6)
The Triune God is the sevenfold intensified Spirit of God today for His move on the earth to accomplish His economy which is the building up of the church, the Body of Christ to consummate in the New Jerusalem as the universal and eternal counterpart, Bride, of Christ. As the seven Spirits of God, God can dispense Himself into us according to our measure and our capacity. We are in weakness. We are limited and defeated by everything. Therefore, the Lord became the sevenfold intensified Spirit to accomplish His purpose in us.
The Spirit
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come! And let him who hears say, Come! And let him who is thirsty come; let him who wills take the water of life freely. (Revelation 22:17)
Through the Spirit we are joined to God forever as His counterpart.
Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes into Me, as the Scripture said, out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water. 39 But this He said concerning the Spirit, whom those who believed into Him were about to receive; for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. (John 7:39)
By this verse, we can see that the Lord became the Spirit AFTER His death and resurrection.
The Spirit of God was there from the beginning (Gen. 1:1-2), but at the time the Lord spoke this word, the Spirit as the Spirit of Christ (Rom. 8:9), the Spirit of Jesus Christ (Phil. 1:19), was not yet, because the Lord had not yet been glorified. Jesus was
glorified when He was resurrected (Luke 24:26). After Jesus' resurrection, the Spirit of God became the Spirit of the incarnated, crucified, and resurrected Jesus Christ, who was
breathed into the disciples by Christ in the evening of the day on which He was resurrected (20:22). The Spirit is now the another Comforter, the Spirit of reality promised by Christ before His death (14:16-17). When the Spirit was the Spirit of God, He had only the divine element. After He became the Spirit of Jesus Christ through Christ's incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection, the Spirit had both the divine element and the human element, with all the essence and reality of the incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection of Christ. Hence, the Spirit is now the all-inclusive Spirit of Jesus Christ as the living water for us to receive (vv. 38-39). [The New Testament Recovery Version, John 7:39 Footnote 1, Living Stream Ministry]
